The harvest almanac

What's picking

Every variety has its own few weeks on the tree. This calendar shows roughly when each one is at its best. The weather has the final say, so the chalkboard at the barn is always more up to date than we are.

The orchard

A working farm that opens its gate for the harvest.

This is a family orchard first, and the trees keep us busy most of the year. When the fruit comes in, we open up so you can pick it yourself, straight off the branch, the way an apple ought to be eaten at least once a season.

Come in boots or sneakers, bring the kids and the grandparents, and give yourself more time than you think you'll need. [Family story to come.]

How a visit goes

  1. Park by the barn. Follow the signs from the road.
  2. Grab a bag. Sizes and pricing posted at the stand.
  3. Find the ripe rows. They’re marked on the board each morning.
  4. Settle up on the way out. And maybe grab a cider.

Good to know

  • Picking depends on the trees and the weather. If in doubt, call ahead.
  • Closed-toe shoes are a good idea; the rows can be muddy.
  • Weekend middays are busiest. Mornings and late afternoons are quieter.
